Rhode Island's plumbing code allows limited greywater reuse for subsurface irrigation under DEM and Department of Health rules, while Providence does not currently operate a municipal recycled-water distribution system for irrigation customers.
Unlike western US cities, Providence draws on a generally water-rich watershed and has not built a purple-pipe recycled water network. RI Department of Health and RI DEM permit limited residential greywater reuse from showers and laundry for subsurface irrigation, subject to plumbing inspection and setback rules from wells and wetlands. Commercial blackwater reuse requires DEM wastewater permits. Rainwater harvesting, by contrast, is broadly allowed and encouraged through the Climate Justice Plan. Customers who want to install a greywater system should consult a licensed plumber and the state plumbing code.
Unpermitted greywater systems can trigger plumbing code violations and orders to disconnect, with fines from the Building Department.
