Unincorporated Lake County does not have a carport-specific ordinance. A detached carport is a detached accessory structure under UDO 154-9-020: rear-yard location, at least a 5-ft side/rear setback, with size and height limited by lot area. Attached carports become part of the principal building and follow its setbacks.
The Lake County UDO does not name carports separately, so a freestanding carport is treated as a detached accessory garage/storage structure under section 154-9-020 on AG- and R-zoned lots: it must be in the rear yard (or set back 200 ft from street rights-of-way) and at least 5 ft from side and rear lot lines, subject to the lot-size area and height tables. Under 154-9-010.F, where a carport is attached to the house by a roof or shared wall 'the accessory building is considered a part of the principal building,' meaning it must meet the home's principal-building setbacks instead. Incorporated cities and towns set their own carport rules.
Setback or size violations get a 15-day cure notice; continuing zoning violations can be cited up to $2,500 first and $7,500 subsequent under IC 36-1-3-8, with each day a separate offense.
