The county cannot zone carports. In the City of Lubbock, an accessory building or carport with vehicular access fronting an alley must be set back at least 20 feet from the alley right-of-way, and detached accessory structures keep five-foot side and rear setbacks.
As a Texas can't-zone county, unincorporated Lubbock County sets no carport standard. The City of Lubbock regulates carports as accessory structures under the Unified Development Code, Division 2.4 Land Use Standards (Chapter 39). Detached accessory structures must have minimum interior side and rear setbacks of five feet and sit to the rear of the front facade of the principal structure. Where an accessory building has vehicular access that fronts an alley, it must be set back a minimum of 20 feet from the alley right-of-way or easement so a parked vehicle does not block the alley. A carport attached to the home follows the primary-structure setbacks. Slaton, Wolfforth and other cities set their own carport rules.
In the City of Lubbock, a carport built inside a required setback or less than 20 feet from an alley it fronts, or without a permit, is a code violation subject to correction orders and municipal fines.
