Carports are accessory structures under Spokane County Zoning Code Chapter 14.606 and must meet residential setbacks (typically 5 ft side and rear) and lot-coverage limits. Garage and carport front/flanking-street setbacks are measured the same for attached and detached structures.
Spokane County treats a carport as an accessory building governed by the dimensional standards in SCC 14.606. In residential zones the minimum side and rear yard setback is generally 5 feet, increasing 1 additional foot for each foot of structure height over 25 feet, up to 15 feet. Front and flanking-street setbacks for garages and carports apply to both attached and detached structures. Carports count toward the combined accessory-structure area caps in Table 606-4. Setbacks are measured from the property line unless a border easement exists, in which case they are measured from the back of the sidewalk. A carport open on the sides is still a covered structure and must respect these setbacks.
Carports built within required setbacks or exceeding coverage limits are zoning violations; Spokane County Building and Planning may order relocation or removal.
