Sutter County defines a carport as a permanently roofed parking structure that becomes a garage if fully enclosed; carports must meet the accessory structure standards of Zoning Code Section 1500-10-030.
Zoning Code Section 1500-27-020 defines a carport as a permanently roofed structure providing space for parking or temporary storage of vehicles, which may or may not include sides but is considered a garage if all four sides are enclosed. As detached residential accessory structures, carports are subject to Section 1500-10-030: maximum 1,000 square feet within a required rear yard, 3- or 6-foot side/rear setbacks for structures under 15 feet tall depending on distance from the street, and primary-structure setbacks if taller. For manufactured homes in residential districts, Section 1500-06-030 requires any associated garage or carport exterior and roofing to use materials customarily found on conventional residential structures.
A carport built contrary to the Zoning Code is unlawful under Section 1500-26-030 and may be abated as a public nuisance under Section 1500-26-040, with misdemeanor or infraction penalties under Section 1500-26-060.
