Pittsburgh permits carports as accessory structures under Zoning Code Ch. 912. Carports go in rear and side yards only; front-yard placement is generally prohibited. Building permit required.
Carports in Pittsburgh are classified as residential accessory structures under Zoning Code Title 9, Article V, Chapter 912 (Accessory Uses and Structures). Section 912.02 lists carports alongside garages, parking stalls, and other permitted accessory uses in residential and H (Hillside) zoning districts. Carports must comply with the front setback and front-yard standards that apply to primary structures, meaning they generally cannot be placed in the front yard or ahead of the primary building face. In rear and side yards, carports are permitted and are not required to meet the same setback as the principal structure, though minimum distances from property lines still apply. Residential carports serving fewer than 4 vehicles are permitted as of right; those serving 4 or more spaces follow parking-facility standards. Height is limited to one story for detached accessory structures. A building permit from the Department of Permits, Licenses, and Inspections (PLI) is required. Given Pittsburgh's hilly terrain and narrow lots, grading and drainage requirements under Chapter 917 may also apply. Carports must not exceed the maximum lot coverage for the zoning district.
Building without a permit: stop-work order plus fines of $100 to $500 per day. Setback violations may require removal or modification. PLI enforces through the Zoning Board of Adjustment process.
