Pittsburgh regulates driveway construction, paving materials, and parking on unpaved surfaces. The Zoning Code sets standards for driveway width, curb cuts, and surface requirements.
Under Pittsburgh Zoning Code Chapter 905.03, residential driveways must maintain a minimum width of 10 feet and a maximum width of 24 feet at the curb line. All driveway surfaces must be paved with an approved hard surface such as concrete, asphalt, brick, or permeable pavers -- parking on grass, dirt, or gravel in front yards is prohibited. Curb-cut permits are required from the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure (DOMI) before constructing a new driveway or modifying an existing one. Properties in historic overlay districts may face additional design review. The city can require removal of unauthorized curb cuts and restoration of the sidewalk at the property owner's expense. Stormwater management rules also apply to new impervious driveway surfaces exceeding 400 square feet.
