Sacramento regulates carports under City Code Chapter 17.624 (Residential Accessory Structure and Use Regulations). Attached carports are governed by section 17.624.040 and must meet minimum interior dimensions of 10 feet wide by 20 feet deep, while detached carports follow the setback and height limits in section 17.624.050.
Per SCC 17.624.040, an attached carport must comply with the height, setback, and lot coverage standards of the underlying zone. The minimum required interior dimension is 10 feet wide by 20 feet deep, though the width may be reduced to 8 feet when the existing interior side-yard setback between the residence and property line is 8 feet. On corner lots, attached garages and carports may project into the required rear-yard area provided the structure stays at least 5 feet from the rear lot line. Detached carports fall under SCC 17.624.050: when located within 60 feet of the front property line, they must meet the same front- and side-yard setbacks as the main building, but beyond 60 feet they may be placed in the rear-yard or interior side-yard setback. Detached accessory structures are capped at 18 feet overall height with a 10-foot maximum wall height, and must be a minimum of 4 feet from the main residence.
Building or expanding a carport without the required building permit is a Sacramento City Code violation subject to administrative penalties under SCC Title 8 (Health and Safety) and stop-work orders from the Building Division. Unpermitted carports must typically be brought into compliance or removed; ongoing zoning violations can result in administrative citations and recordation of a code-enforcement lien against the property.
