Stockton limits accessory structures to 15 feet tall under SMC Title 16. Carports require building permits and must meet zoning setbacks. Alley-facing entrances need a 10-foot setback.
Stockton Municipal Code Chapter 16.36 and Section 16.80.020 govern detached accessory structures including carports in residential zones. Maximum height is 15 feet. Standard side and rear yard setbacks apply per the zoning district. For lots abutting a public alley, accessory structures must be at least 5 feet from the alley property line, but garages and carports with an entrance facing the alley require a minimum 10-foot setback. Carports must be architecturally compatible with the primary dwelling. A building permit is required for carports and any accessory structure exceeding 120 square feet. Structures 120 square feet or under and single-story may be exempt from a permit but still must comply with setback and height limits. Contact Stockton Community Development Building Division at (209) 937-8561 for permit requirements.
