Universal City, TX Accessory Structures: Carport Rules (2026)

Carports are permitted in Universal City as accessory structures that provide covered vehicle parking. Under the Unified Development Code, carports in the side or rear yard follow the same setback and height limits as other accessory structures, typically 5 feet from side and rear lot lines and 15 feet maximum height. Front yard or driveway carports that cover the required driveway and front porch area are more restricted and are generally required to maintain the front yard setback, match the principal dwelling in roof pitch and materials, and be architecturally integrated so they do not appear as a temporary or metal shed in front of the home. Building permits are required for permanent carports because they involve footings, roof framing, and potentially connection to the principal structure. Carports count toward the lot coverage and impervious cover limits in most zoning districts. HOAs in neighborhoods such as Olympia Hills may further restrict metal carports entirely or require only enclosed garages. Temporary tarp canopies are usually not permitted as permanent structures.
