Carports are treated as accessory buildings in Ann Arbor. They may not exceed 21 feet in height, and an attached carport may not occupy any part of the required side open space. Detached carports must stay at least 3 feet from lot lines.
Washtenaw County does not zone land, so carport rules come from your city or township. Ann Arbor's Zoning Ordinance lists carports among accessory buildings (garages, carports, garden sheds, workshops, etc.). Attached accessory buildings such as a garage or carport may not occupy any portion of the required side open space. Detached accessory buildings may be located in required side or rear open space only if they are farther from the street than the principal building and more than 3 feet from any lot line. On corner lots, no part of any accessory building may be nearer a street lot line than the required open space. Carports 200 sq ft or larger need a building permit.
Carports built without permits or within required setbacks are zoning violations; the city may require relocation or removal and issue civil infraction fines.
