Charleston allows beekeeping in residential areas with certain conditions. Hives must be set back from property lines and have a water source. The SC Department of Agriculture registers beekeepers.
Beekeeping is allowed in Charleston residential areas subject to certain conditions. Hives should be set back at least 10 feet from property lines and oriented so flight paths do not cross neighboring properties at low heights. A flyway barrier (fence or hedge) at least 6 feet tall may be required when hives are near property lines. A water source must be provided to prevent bees from seeking water on neighboring properties. The South Carolina Department of Agriculture maintains a beekeeper registration program.
Nuisance complaints about bees can lead to code enforcement action. Beekeepers may be required to relocate hives causing problems.
