Sedgwick County's animal code has no dedicated beekeeping ordinance. Bees fall within the code's broad definition of "animal," so hives must not become a nuisance to neighbors. There is no county hive limit, permit or setback specific to bees; placement is governed by the UZC zoning district and nuisance rules.
Sec. 5-1 defines "animal" to include "bees" among tamed or domesticated organisms, so beekeeping is subject to the general nuisance-animal standard in sec. 5-161: animals must be maintained so as not to cause discomfort to occupants of other premises by reason of offensive odors, insects, noise, nonconfinement or safety hazards. The county sets no specific hive count, registration or setback for honeybees in unincorporated areas. Kansas regulates apiary health and disease statewide through the Kansas Department of Agriculture, but colony-siting limits, where they exist, come from municipal ordinances. Confirm zoning-district allowances with the Wichita–Sedgwick County MAPD.
A hive that creates a nuisance (odor, swarming, safety hazard) can be abated as a nuisance animal under chapter 5, with fines up to $500 fixed by the county court.
