Bowling Green Code Section 5-1 requires that all dogs be on a leash or confined on the owner's premises at all times. Dogs found in violation may be impounded at the Bowling Green-Warren County Humane Society. Under Kentucky state law (KRS 258.215 and 258.235), all dogs three (3) months or older must be vaccinated against rabies and wear a current rabies tag; Warren County administers the local dog/cat licensing program.
Bowling Green Code of Ordinances Chapter V (Animals) requires that all dogs be on a leash or confined on the owner's premises at all times; off-property, any dog must be restrained by a lead or leash and under the control of a responsible person. The only exception inside the city is the enclosed off-leash area at H.P. Thomas Bark Park. Dogs found at large may be detained by the City Animal Protection Officer and impounded at the Bowling Green-Warren County Humane Society (1924 Louisville Road, 270-842-8572). Kentucky state law (KRS 258.215) requires all dogs, cats, and ferrets three (3) months of age or older to be vaccinated against rabies by a licensed veterinarian, and KRS 258.235(4) imposes strict liability on dog owners for any damage their dog causes to a person, livestock, or other property. KRS 258.265 authorizes a peace officer or animal control officer to seize or destroy any dog found 'running at large between sunset and sunrise unaccompanied by and not under the control of its owner or handler.' KRS 258.135 makes the county responsible for the animal-licensing program; Warren County issues annual dog and cat licenses through the Bowling Green-Warren County Humane Society. Assistance animals are exempt from all state and local licensing fees under KRS 258.500. Animal Protection (City): 270-393-3102 / animalprotection@bgky.org. Sheriff's Animal Control (Warren County): Warren County Sheriff's Office.
A dog off the owner's property without a leash, or running at large, is a violation of Bowling Green Code Section 5-1 and may result in impoundment at the Bowling Green-Warren County Humane Society, plus reclaim fees and a citation. Failure to vaccinate a dog/cat/ferret 3 months or older against rabies violates KRS 258.215. Failure to maintain a current Warren County license violates KRS 258.135 and the County licensing ordinance.
