In unincorporated Amador County, dogs may not run at large. County Code defines a dog as 'at large' when off the owner's premises and not on leash or under the owner's direct control. Letting a dog run at large is prohibited and chargeable as an infraction.
Amador County's Animal Control Ordinance (County Code Title 8) governs dogs in unincorporated areas. Section 8.04.070 defines 'at large': an animal (except a domestic cat) is at large 'if it is off the premises of its owner and not under restraint by leash, or not under the control and in the immediate presence of its owner.' Section 8.08.030 prohibits an owner from allowing any animal (except a domestic cat) to run at large or to trespass on public or private property. Chapter 8.24 (Dogs) adds that no person shall permit a dog to run at or bite any person or animal in any public street, place, or park, or to befoul public property (8.24.010). After a dog bites someone, the animal control director may order the owner to keep the dog confined or 'securely hold the dog by a leash or other device' to prevent it straying (8.24.020, 8.24.030). The County does not publish a specific maximum leash length. Violations of the Dogs chapter are infractions (8.24.140). Enforcement is by Amador County Animal Control, which serves the unincorporated county and contracting cities.
Allowing a dog to run at large or befoul public property is an infraction under Chapter 8.24 (8.24.140). Animal control officers may impound dogs found in violation, and impound/redemption costs are charged to the owner.
