Chapter 6.04 of the Tuolumne County Ordinance Code governs animal control within Sonora. A leash is defined as any substantial rope, leather strap, chain, or other material not exceeding 6 feet in length held by a person capable of actually controlling the dog. Dogs found at large may be impounded. Dog licensing is required under both county ordinance and California Food and Agricultural Code section 30500 and subsequent sections. Licenses are available at the shelter office at 10040 Victoria Way, Jamestown (Tuesday through Friday, 9 AM to 2 PM) or by mail to 2 S. Green Street, Sonora. A late penalty applies if licensing is not completed within 30 days, with an exception for puppies under 6 months if spayed or neutered.
Dogs found at large are subject to impoundment at the county shelter. Unlicensed dogs are subject to late fees. Repeat offenses may result in fines.
