Macomb County Animal Control prohibits keeping dangerous or exotic animals without proper federal, state, and local permits plus municipality approval. Exotic animals include venomous or large non-native reptiles, non-human primates, wolf-dog crosses, and large carnivores under Michigan law.
Under the county Best Practices (Section 8.6), no person may own, possess, breed, buy, sell, or harbor any dangerous or exotic animal without the proper permits and municipal approval, and Animal Control may inspect the premises annually. The Best Practices define an exotic animal as any wild mammal, reptile, or fowl not naturally tame that could endanger human life or property, expressly including venomous non-native reptiles, any non-native reptile weighing 40 pounds or more, non-human primates, animals covered by the Michigan Wolf-Dog Cross Act (MCL 287.1001 et seq.), and animals under the Michigan Large Carnivore Act (MCL 287.1101 et seq.). AZA-accredited zoological facilities are exempt.
Keeping a dangerous or exotic animal without the required permits and municipality approval is a misdemeanor of up to 90 days and/or a $500 fine, each day a separate offense. Prohibited animals may be impounded.
