Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife (MassWildlife) strictly regulates possession of exotic and wild animals under MGL c. 131 §23 and 321 CMR 9.01 (Restricted Wildlife list). Most wild mammals, reptiles, large constrictors, venomous snakes, primates, and many bird species are prohibited without a special state permit. Common exotic pets that are banned in MA include: ferrets (illegal in MA — one of few states), hedgehogs (technically restricted), sugar gliders, large constrictors (pythons, boas over 6 feet), venomous reptiles, and all native wildlife. Norfolk County does not issue exotic pet permits; all permitting is through MassWildlife. Individual municipalities may impose additional restrictions.
