A maximum of three adult dogs (four months or older) may be kept on any residentially zoned property. Four or more requires a special exception permit from Planning, or a kennel license in an Agricultural district.
Chesterfield's Zoning Ordinance limits residential lots to three dogs aged four months or older per family. To keep four or more, an owner must obtain a special exception for personal dog-keeping through the Planning Department. Residents in Agricultural districts may instead obtain a kennel license: fees are $25 for a 4-to-20-dog capacity kennel and $35 for a 21-to-50-dog kennel. All dogs four months or older must also be licensed with the county; a lifetime license costs $10 if rabies vaccination stays current.
Exceeding three dogs without a special exception or kennel license is a zoning violation enforced by Planning; unlicensed dogs violate the county licensing ordinance.
