ARS 17-255.06 makes it unlawful to intentionally feed wildlife in a manner that creates a public nuisance or endangers human safety. The Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) enforces statewide. In Pima County, javelina, coyotes, bobcats, and deer frequently enter residential areas in the Catalina Foothills, Tanque Verde Valley, and Saguaro National Park buffer zones. Feeding these animals habituates them to human contact and increases conflicts. Bird feeders are generally exempt but must be positioned to exclude javelina access (elevated 5+ feet, no ground spillage). Rattlesnakes (Western Diamondback, Mojave, Black-tailed) are protected wildlife under ARS Title 17 and may not be killed without cause; AZGFD recommends calling a licensed rattlesnake removal service rather than attempting relocation. Gila monsters are fully protected under ARS 17-309. Pima County Animal Care does not handle wildlife calls; residents should contact AZGFD at 623-236-7201.
