Feeding wildlife and leaving food, garbage, or other attractants accessible to bears is prohibited under Truckee's solid waste ordinance and California Fish & Game Code Section 251.3. Bear-resistant storage is required.
Truckee's solid waste ordinance requires that all solid waste be stored in animal-resistant containers, and that nothing be set at the curb before 5:00 AM on collection day. California Fish & Game Code Section 251.3 separately prohibits intentional or negligent feeding of bears, and California Code of Regulations Title 14 Section 472 prohibits feeding big game mammals. Bird feeders that attract bears must be removed when bears are active. Repeated bear-attractant violations can be cited by both the Town and California Department of Fish & Wildlife.
Town solid-waste violations follow the standard schedule: warning, then $235 fine, then up to $1,000 for chronic violations. Feeding wildlife under CA F&G Code 251.3 is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 6 months in jail and/or up to $1,000 fine.
