Truckee, CA Animal Ordinances: Dog Leash Laws (2026)

420 reaches any person owning or controlling an animal who causes, permits, or allows it to stray onto a public street, sidewalk, park, school ground or other public place, or onto private property without the consent of whoever controls that property. 020(f) as an animal off its owner's premises and not under control by visual and voice command, or by leash, chain, tether, or an adequate fence. The Section carves out four exceptions: a hunting dog while it is actually hunting or being trained on land the handler has a legal right to use; a working dog while it is working other animals; any animal in the immediate presence of, and under the direct and demonstrable control of, its owner; and, for the Truckee River Regional Park specifically, animals kept on a leash and under full control from May 1 to October 31.

Outside that seasonal window, park animals still must remain in the owner's immediate presence and under direct, effective control. 080. 430, makes it a misdemeanor for a dog to run loose on a farm where livestock or fowl are kept without the farm owner's consent.
