Travis County Chapter 64 adopts International Building Code rules for egress hardware, requiring single-action unlatching from the egress side and limiting deadbolts and barricade devices in commercial and assembly occupancies.
Egress doors in non-residential occupancies must open with a single motion, no key or special knowledge, under IBC 1010. Schools and childcare centers may install approved classroom security devices that satisfy single-action egress while resisting forced entry. Residential dwellings allow standard deadbolts. Multifamily corridor doors must release without keys from inside. Panic hardware is required for assembly occupancies above the IBC occupant threshold. Modifications during tenant improvements trigger ESD fire marshal review and updated certificate of occupancy.
Stop-work orders, certificate-of-occupancy revocation, civil penalties under Chapter 64, and life-safety violations during ESD inspection that can shut a business until corrected.
