Eligible New Orleans homes and small businesses get once-weekly curbside trash collection using a free 96-gallon roll cart. Set-out timing is fixed by ordinance, and outside the French Quarter/Downtown district up to 96 gallons is removed per regular collection.

Outside the French Quarter and Downtown Development District, not more than 96 gallons of solid waste per service location shall be removed at each regular collection; within these districts, not more than 35 gallons per service location shall be removed at each regular collection.
Place your roll cart at the curb in front of your own home so it opens toward the street, without blocking traffic or sidewalks. Set out after 4:00 p.m. the day before, before 5:00 a.m. on collection day, and remove it by 8:00 p.m.

Solid waste must be placed curbside for collection prior to 5:00 a.m. on the designated collection day, but not prior to 4:00 p.m. of the day prior to the designated collection day. Carts must be removed from the curb or service alley as promptly as possible, but no later than 8:00 p.m. on the day of collection.
New Orleans collects bulky items like furniture, mattresses, and appliances on a scheduled bulky-waste day. Residents should call 311 to arrange it, and must not set items out more than 24 hours before the scheduled collection or they risk a fine.

Bulky waste shall be collected in accordance with section 138-43. Wednesday is bulky waste collection day for eligible residential properties only, including up to 6 secured bags of green waste or up to 6 bundles of tree limbs cut in 4-foot lengths, metals, furniture, mattresses, appliances with compressors removed, carpet less than 4-foot in length rolled and tied, and up to 4 tires.
New Orleans curbside recycling is free but opt-in: eligible residents call 311 to register and receive a free blue recycling cart. Collection is once weekly on your trash day. Do not bag recyclables, and rinse containers before setting them out.
Dumping any waste on public rights-of-way, city property, or someone else's property without consent is illegal in New Orleans. Sanitation Enforcement Rangers patrol for it, and Louisiana law lets Orleans Parish impose fines and up to six months in jail.
