NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) collects trash on Staten Island. Under the 2024 Containerization Rule, residential buildings with 1-9 units must place refuse in official NYC bins (wheeled, lidded) at the curb no earlier than 6 PM the night before collection, or 4 AM the morning of collection if in a bin.
Official NYC-issued or approved bins must be placed at the curb between 6 PM the night before pickup and 4 AM the morning of pickup, and removed from the public way by end of collection day. Bins must not block pedestrian passage, fire hydrants, bus stops, or curb cuts.
Bulk items (furniture, mattresses, appliances) are collected by DSNY on regular trash days with no separate appointment for most items. Mattresses and box springs must be sealed in a plastic mattress bag (available at hardware stores). Refrigerators and AC units with refrigerant require a CFC-removal appointment.
Recycling is mandatory on Staten Island. Metal, glass, plastic, and cartons go in one bin (blue labeled); mixed paper and cardboard go in a separate bin (green labeled). Curbside composting of yard waste and food scraps became mandatory for all Staten Island residents in October 2024 under the Zero Waste Act.
