Schenectady County, NY Drone Rules: Commercial Drones (2026)

All commercial drone operations in Schenectady County are governed by FAA 14 CFR Part 107, which requires the operator to hold a Remote Pilot Certificate (passing the Part 107 knowledge test), register each aircraft over 0.55 lbs with the FAA, and follow operational rules - 400 ft maximum altitude, daylight or civil-twilight with anti-collision lighting, visual line of sight, no flights over people without a waiver or compliant Category 1-4 aircraft, and no flights in controlled airspace without LAANC authorization. Schenectady County Airport (SCH) in Glenville and Albany International (ALB) just across the county line create Class D and Class C airspace respectively covering substantial portions of central and eastern Schenectady County - LAANC authorization through the FAA app is required before flight. Local municipalities cannot regulate airspace (preempted by federal law) but may restrict takeoff, landing, and drone operations on public property. NY State Parks (including Plotter Kill area parks) prohibit drone launching and landing without permit. Since September 2023, the FAA Remote ID rule requires all drones to broadcast identification during flight.
