Schenectady County, NY Drone Rules: Recreational Drones (2026)

Recreational drone flight in Schenectady County is governed by 49 USC §44809 (Exception for Limited Recreational Operations). Hobbyist pilots must register drones over 0.55 lbs with the FAA, pass the TRUST (The Recreational UAS Safety Test) and carry proof, fly within visual line of sight, below 400 ft AGL, and only under a community-based organization's safety guidelines such as AMA rules. Schenectady County Airport (SCH) in Glenville creates Class D controlled airspace up to 2,500 ft MSL extending several miles from the field; Albany International (ALB) Class C airspace also overlaps eastern parts of the county.
