NYC Admin Code ยง10-126 effectively bans drone takeoffs and landings in Brooklyn except from designated Parks Department sites. Federal FAA rules also apply, and most of NYC is Class B restricted airspace.
NYC Administrative Code ยง10-126 prohibits taking off or landing an aircraft (including drones and unmanned aircraft systems) anywhere in the five boroughs except from airports, heliports, or sites designated by the Parks Department. In practice this makes recreational drone flight nearly impossible in Brooklyn except at NYC Parks-permitted model aircraft fields such as Calvert Vaux Park and Marine Park. FAA rules apply on top of the city ban: operators must register drones over 0.55 lb, pass the TRUST test, remain below 400 ft, and avoid restricted airspace. Most of Brooklyn sits under JFK and LaGuardia Class B airspace requiring LAANC authorization. NYPD actively enforces the city ban and responds to 311 drone complaints. A 2023 drone pilot program allows limited FAA-waivered commercial operations, but recreational flying remains largely illegal outside designated fields.
Violating NYC Admin Code ยง10-126: misdemeanor, fines up to $1,000 and/or 30 days imprisonment, plus drone confiscation. FAA civil penalties for unregistered flight or airspace violations can exceed $27,500.
