Teaneck participates in the National Flood Insurance Program; structures in mapped flood hazard areas must meet elevation, floodproofing, and permit requirements.
Teaneck enforces a flood damage prevention ordinance consistent with NJDEP's Flood Hazard Area Control Act and FEMA's NFIP standards. Properties in Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHAs) along the Hackensack River and tributaries must elevate lowest floors above the base flood elevation plus required NJ freeboard, restrict basement habitable space, and use flood-resistant materials. Substantial improvements (≥50% of structure value) trigger full code compliance. Permits are required for any construction, fill, or grading in mapped flood zones, and elevation certificates are required after construction.
Fines up to $2,000 per offense, permit revocation, and possible loss of NFIP eligibility for noncompliance.
