Chicago has not enacted a citywide gas-powered leaf blower ban. Operations remain governed by general MCC 8-32 noise rules and CDPH air-quality limits, though some neighborhoods have pushed local restrictions.
Unlike Evanston and several North Shore suburbs, Chicago has not adopted a gas-powered leaf blower phase-out as of 2026. Gas blowers remain legal citywide subject to MCC Ch. 8-32 noise limits, which cap construction-equipment sound at 76 dB(A) measured 50 feet from the source between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. CDPH retains general air-quality authority but has not issued blower-specific orders. Several aldermen have introduced ordinance proposals through the Committee on Environmental Protection, including a 2023 draft modeled on Washington D.C.'s ban, but none has passed. Voluntary electric-blower transition incentives exist through some ward menu programs and CDOT.
Noise-violation fines under MCC 8-32-070 run $100 to $600 per offense. CDPH may issue separate dust or particulate citations of up to $1,000 if blower use generates visible plumes that violate fugitive-dust rules in MCC 11-4-760.
