The UDO caps fence height by the Sec. 9.9 table, but allows exceptions for recreational facilities such as tennis courts, electrical substations, and where other UDO provisions permit a taller fence or wall.
Under Section 9.9.1A, the maximum fence or wall height is governed by the tier-and-location table unless a listed exception applies. Recreational-facility fences (for example around a tennis court) and fences enclosing an electrical substation are not held to the standard residential caps. Taller fences and walls may also be allowed where another provision of the Ordinance authorizes them. Corner lots, sight-triangle rules at intersections, and pool-barrier standards impose additional requirements on placement.
Fences exceeding the table height without qualifying for an exception or variance are zoning violations enforced under NCGS 160D, subject to civil penalties and corrective orders.
