Georgetown UDC Section 8.07.030 sets general fence requirements: structural integrity against weather, ongoing maintenance, finished side facing streets and parkland, sight-triangle clearance, and limits on signs, temporary fences, and electric fences. Section 8.07.030 of the Georgetown UDC lists general requirements that apply to all fences regardless of zoning district. Fences must be built to perpetually maintain structural integrity against wind, rain and temperature, and chain link, welded wire or picket fences need at least two support rails spaced at least half the fence height apart (Sec. 8.07.030.A). Fences must be kept in good repair and a safe, attractive condition (Sec. 8.07.030.B). Height is measured from the higher side (Sec. 8.07.030.D), and the finished face must front all public streets and parkland (Sec. 8.07.030.E). No fence or wall more than 25% solid or over three feet tall may sit within the sight triangle at street and alley intersections (Sec. 8.07.030.F, referencing Sec. 12.03.050). Messages or advertising on a fence are treated as signage and generally not allowed (Sec. 8.07.030.G). Temporary fences are limited to active construction or stormwater permit sites (Sec. 8.07.030.H). Electric fences must sit at least ten feet from public rights-of-way/sidewalks, at least two feet from private property lines, and carry warning signs (Sec. 8.07.030.I). Separately, Section 8.07.060 requires single-family, townhome and multifamily developments bounded by a major collector, arterial or freeway to build an opaque masonry boundary wall at least five but no more than six feet tall, with articulation features. These are Georgetown city standards, not state law.
Common violations include fences in disrepair or structurally unsound, fences blocking the sight triangle at corners, advertising attached to a fence, electric fences too close to the right-of-way or property line, and required subdivision boundary walls that are missing or out of spec.
