Huntsville requires clear sight triangles at street intersections and driveway approaches. Fences, walls, and landscaping within the visibility triangle cannot exceed approximately 3 feet in height. Applies to all corner lots citywide.
Huntsville Zoning Ordinance and Subdivision Regulations require a clear sight triangle at every street intersection and at driveway approaches onto collector streets. The triangle typically measures 25 feet along each curb line from the point of intersection. Within that triangle, no fence, wall, hedge, berm, or landscaping may exceed 3 feet above the crown of the nearest street, and trees must be limbed up at least 8 feet. Memorial Parkway, University Drive, Governors Drive, and other high-traffic corridors receive strict enforcement from Huntsville Public Works (256-427-5300) and Police Traffic Division. AASHTO sight distance standards apply to state and federal routes crossing the city. Violations are common at corner lots with mature shrubs, and the city can order removal after a cure notice.
Owner notified to trim/remove. Failure to cure within 30 days: fines up to $500 per Huntsville Code Sec. 1-8, plus city may perform abatement and lien the property for costs.
