Huntsville, AL Parking Rules: Street Parking Limits (2026)

Article V, Division 1 of the Huntsville City Code governs everyday street parking. Sec. 25-204(a)(2) forbids standing or parking, even momentarily beyond a passenger drop-off, in front of a public or private driveway, within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, within 20 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection, or within 30 feet of a stop sign or signal. Sec. 25-204(a)(1) separately bars stopping on the roadway side of another parked car, on a sidewalk, in an intersection or crosswalk, on a bridge, or on railroad tracks.

Sec. 25-204(b) makes it unlawful to move a vehicle into any of those prohibited spots or to pull away from a curb an unlawful distance. Sec. 25-215 sets the physical manner of parking: right wheels must sit parallel to and within 18 inches of the curb, with at least three feet of clearance from the next vehicle, except that one-way streets allow parking against the left curb and officially marked angle-parking streets require the vehicle angled to the painted lines within 12 inches of the curb.

Parking against the flow of traffic on a two-way street, commonly called facing traffic, violates this section. Sec. 25-206 separately requires that at least ten feet of roadway width remain clear for moving traffic regardless of how a car is angled. These rules apply at all times or per posted signs under Sec. 25-202, and no restriction is enforceable under Sec. 25-203 unless the required sign or curb marking is actually in place when the citation is written. Sec. 25-204(c) preserves the state penalty track under Ala. Code § 32-5-312 alongside the city fine.
