Huntsville, AL Animal Ordinances: Veterinary Clinic Zoning (2026)

The Zoning Ordinance's district articles each enumerate the only uses a property may be put to, so where a veterinary practice can locate in Huntsville depends entirely on which article a parcel sits in. Section 24.1.1, in the Highway Business C-4 district, lists animal hospital or veterinary clinic, pet shops in the same permitted-use roster as ambulance services, auto sales lots and assisted living facilities, a district the ordinance's purpose clause describes as built for uses that cater to the traveling public, tourists, trucks, and heavy automobile traffic along major arterials. That line item is the only place in the code that affirmatively lists a veterinary use as permitted.

Section 43.2, governing the roughly 3,000-acre Airport Industrial Park district around the Huntsville-Madison County Airport, runs the opposite direction. Its stated intent is to keep out industries obnoxious or offensive to other uses permitted in and adjacent to the district by reason of noise, smoke, dirt, dust, odor, fire or explosive hazard, and other objectionable features, and its prohibited-use list puts veterinary hospital alongside abattoirs, poultry killing or dressing operations, dead-animal reduction and rendering plants, junkyards and trailer parks. Because C-4's permitted list and the airport district's prohibited list are the only two places the ordinance addresses veterinary uses by name, and every other district's use roster is exclusive of anything not listed, a clinic operator has to confirm C-4 zoning, or another district whose own list happens to include it, before signing a lease or filing for a building permit.
