Pittsburgh limits front-yard fences to 4 feet (open/ornamental only) and rear/side fences to 6 feet. Corner-lot fences within 20 feet of an intersection must stay under 3.5 feet for visibility.
Under the Pittsburgh Zoning Code (Title Nine, Section 918.03), fences, walls, hedges, and similar features are permitted in all zoning districts subject to specific height and design standards. In front yards or side yards where the fence extends closer to the street than the primary structure, only open and ornamental fences are allowed, with a maximum height of 4 feet. In all other yard locations, fences may be up to 6 feet tall and may be opaque. On corner lots, fences within 20 feet of the street corner must not exceed 3.5 feet in height to preserve clear sight triangles for vehicular and pedestrian safety. Walls or fences exceeding 40 feet in continuous length must incorporate visual relief through changes in material, pattern, or the addition of columns. Fences not meeting standard height limits may be approved through the Administrator Exception procedure in Section 922.08. The finished side of any fence must face outward toward the adjacent property or public right-of-way. Chain-link fencing with slat inserts is permitted only in GI (General Industrial) zoning districts.
