In unincorporated Kane County, barbed wire, spiked, and electrically charged fences are prohibited on residential lots. Fences must stay clear of the floodway, and pool-barrier fences must be submitted with the swimming-pool permit application.
Under Zoning Ordinance Sec. 7.5-3, no fence with barbed wire, spikes, or any similar device, and no electrically charged fence sufficient to cause a shock, may be erected, placed, or maintained on any residential lot. Fences must also meet the corner sight-line rule near intersections. No fences of any type are allowed in the floodway; fences in the floodplain require permitting from Kane County Water Resources on a case-by-case basis. Where a fence serves as part of a swimming-pool barrier, its type and location must be included in the swimming-pool permit application rather than a separate fence permit.
Prohibited barbed-wire, spiked, or electric residential fences and floodway fences are code violations subject to removal or abatement by the county.
