Under the Lexington Zoning Ordinance (Chapter 14A), residential fences in rear and side yards may reach up to 8 feet in height, while front-yard fences are typically limited to 4 feet and must meet sight-distance requirements at driveways and intersections. Commercial and industrial zones allow taller fences subject to design standards.
LFUCG regulates fence height through the Zoning Ordinance and planning review. In single-family and two-family residential districts, the standard rules permit fences in rear and side yards up to 8 feet tall, measured from finished grade to the top of the fence. Front-yard fences β defined as any fence forward of the principal structure's front building line β are generally limited to 4 feet in height and are further restricted near driveways and street intersections by a sight visibility triangle, which prevents any sight obstruction between 2.5 and 8 feet tall within the designated triangle at corners. Open-design fences (split rail, picket, or decorative iron) are often preferred for front yards. Corner lots face dual front-yard treatment, with both street-facing yards subject to the lower height limit. Commercial and industrial zones allow taller security fences, often up to 8 to 10 feet, and barbed wire or razor wire is restricted to industrial and heavily secured commercial uses with top-of-fence placement only. Historic overlay districts, including several neighborhoods in downtown Lexington and Ashland Park, impose additional design review on fence materials and heights through the Courthouse Area Design Review Board or the Board of Architectural Review. HOA covenants frequently tighten height or require specific materials such as black aluminum or split rail. Retaining walls functioning as fences are measured separately.
