Rocklin Municipal Code Chapter 17.76 caps residential fences at 6 feet in side and rear yards and 30 inches within the required front-yard setback. Reverse corner-lot street-side yards also drop to 30 inches unless the Planning Director approves a 6-foot height through a variance.
Per RMC 17.76.020, within the required front-yard setback of all residential lots, fences and walls may not exceed thirty inches (30") measured from finished grade. Outside that front-yard setback, on interior and corner lots, fences may reach six feet (6') along interior side, street side, and rear property lines. On reverse corner lots, the street-side yard setback area is also limited to 30 inches; a 6-foot fence in that area requires a Reverse Corner Lot Fencing Variance from the Planning Director (see Rocklin Planning Division application form, 10-9-14 revision). All fences must comply with the Visibility Requirements in the City of Rocklin Construction Specifications, Improvement Standards, and Standard Drawings to preserve sight distance at driveways and intersections. Under California Building Code Section 105.2 (adopted via RMC Title 15), fences not over 7 feet tall are exempt from building permit requirements, but zoning compliance is still required.
Building a 6-foot fence inside the front-yard setback, or in a reverse corner street-side yard without a variance, is a zoning violation enforced by Rocklin Code Enforcement (916-625-5498) and may require removal or lowering of the fence.
