Rensselaer County does not regulate fence materials at the county level. The City of Troy imposes stricter review inside the four designated Local Historic Districts (Central Troy, Washington Park, Grand Street/Hill, and Northern Pine Hills) per Troy Code Chapter 285, where the Landmarks Review Commission must approve materials before installation; approved materials are typically wood pickets, wrought iron, and cast iron matching the district period (1840-1900). Chain link is disfavored in historic districts and prohibited in front yards. Barbed wire is banned in all residential zones countywide.
