Lee County's fence permitting rules (implementing LDC Chapter 34) require fences and walls of conventional materials such as concrete block, brick, wood, decorative aluminum, iron or steel, chain link, or fence-grade composite. Fences made of barbed wire, spire tips, sharp objects, or that are electrified may not be erected within 100 feet of any residential area or residential zoning district without the Director's authorization and a hazards review. Non-traditional materials, including but not limited to tires, mufflers, and hubcaps, are prohibited. Fabric sheets, nets, plastic, metal, or vinyl sheets or slats may not be used as part of a fence or attached to one for privacy or required screening.
Using prohibited materials or installing barbed-wire/electrified fencing near residential zones without authorization is a code violation. Lee County Code Compliance can order removal; unresolved cases go to the Hearing Examiner/Special Magistrate for civil penalties (F.S. Ch. 162).
