Aurora requires a minimum 5-foot barrier with self-closing, self-latching gates around all swimming pools and spas over 24 inches deep, per the adopted International Residential Code. Barriers must prevent unsupervised child access.
Aurora has adopted the International Residential Code Appendix G pool barrier provisions. All residential pools, spas, and hot tubs with water depth exceeding 24 inches must be enclosed by a barrier at least 60 inches (5 feet) high measured from the exterior ground surface. The barrier must have no openings through which a 4-inch sphere can pass. Vertical pickets must be spaced less than 1.75 inches apart. Gates must open outward away from the pool, self-close, self-latch with the latch at least 54 inches above grade, and be locked when the pool is unattended. Pool covers listed to ASTM F1346 may be accepted for spas. A permit is required for new pool construction and barrier installation. Doors from the house to the pool area must have audible alarms.
Non-compliant pool barriers are a strict-liability public safety violation and may lead to drainage and closure orders until fixed. Civil liability for accidents is significant.
