Aurora prohibits barbed wire, razor wire, and electrified fences in residential districts. Approved residential materials include wood, vinyl, wrought iron, composite, and masonry. Temporary chain-link and orange plastic fencing allowed only for construction.
Under the Aurora UDO, residential fence materials are limited to durable, finished materials: wood (cedar, redwood, treated pine), vinyl/PVC, wrought iron or decorative steel, masonry (brick, block, stone), and composite products. Barbed wire, razor wire, concertina wire, and electrified fences are prohibited in all residential zones. Chain link is permitted in residential side and rear yards but may be restricted by HOAs. Makeshift materials such as pallets, tarps, sheet metal, tires, or salvaged vehicle parts are prohibited and treated as a property maintenance violation. Agricultural and industrial zones may permit barbed wire and taller chain link with specific setbacks. Temporary construction fencing (chain link panels, orange safety fencing) is allowed only for active permitted projects.
Prohibited materials must be removed. Code Enforcement issues notices requiring correction within 10 to 30 days.
