Swimming pool barrier requirements in Boise follow the Idaho Building Code adoption of IRC Appendix G. Any pool, spa, or hot tub capable of holding more than 24 inches of water requires a barrier at least 48 inches (4 feet) in height measured from grade on the outside of the fence. Openings in the barrier must not allow a 4-inch sphere to pass through. Gates must be self-closing and self-latching with the latch mechanism located at least 54 inches above grade or on the interior side. Where a dwelling wall serves as part of the barrier, doors opening to the pool must have alarms or a power safety cover. Above-ground pools with 48-inch walls can serve as their own barrier if the ladder is removable or secured. Pool fence permits are required regardless of fence height under BCC Title 4.
