Boise permits wood, vinyl, metal, composite, and masonry fences. Barbed wire and electric fences are prohibited in residential zones. Foothills wildfire overlay restricts combustible fence materials within 5 feet of structures.
Standard residential fence materials allowed citywide include cedar, redwood, pressure-treated pine, vinyl, powder-coated aluminum, wrought iron, chain link, composite, and masonry (brick, block, stucco). Barbed wire, razor wire, and electrified fencing are prohibited in all residential zones under BCC 11-04-03.3; these are allowed only in agricultural and industrial zones with approval. The Boise Foothills Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) overlay imposes additional restrictions: combustible fence materials (wood, composite) within 5 feet of a home structure are discouraged, and 5 feet of non-combustible fencing (metal, masonry) adjacent to the structure is recommended under IFC Appendix K as adopted. Historic Districts favor wood picket, wood board, or wrought iron appropriate to the period of the contributing structure.
