BCC 5-1-20 prohibits the keeping of wild, dangerous, or exotic animals within Boise city limits. The ordinance specifically lists large felines (lions, tigers, cougars, leopards), bears, wolves and wolf hybrids, non-human primates, venomous reptiles, crocodilians, and constricting snakes exceeding 8 feet. Idaho Fish and Game rules under IDAPA 13.01.10 separately regulate native wildlife possession. Licensed USDA exhibitors, zoos, and wildlife rehabilitators are exempt. Common exotic pets that ARE allowed in Boise include ferrets, sugar gliders, bearded dragons, ball pythons, and most parrots. Chickens are permitted under a separate urban agriculture provision allowing up to 6 hens (no roosters) per residential lot.
