Boise, ID Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

In Residential and Mixed-Use zoning districts, Boise City Code § 11-04-09.10.B(1) sets maximum fence heights by location: solid fences up to 36 inches (or open-vision fences up to 48 inches, with gaps at least 50% of slat width) may go in the front yard setback, fences up to 72 inches are allowed along rear and side property lines, and fences between the front setback and the front of the building are capped at 48 inches unless the Planning Director approves greater height to screen headlight glare. Electric fences are banned citywide, and barbed wire is limited to I-1/I-2 industrial zones. Fences over 7 feet in Mixed-Use districts need Building Department approval, and any fence must sit entirely on the owner's property or an easement.
