The barrier must be at least 48 inches high, with no openings, handholds, or footholds that would let a child climb. Gates must be self-closing and self-latching, with latches at least 54 inches above grade. As an alternative, the pool itself can be equipped with an approved safety pool cover, all doors with direct access can have alarms, or the pool can have an approved alarm system.
Failure to maintain barrier is a second-degree misdemeanor under §515.29 (max $500 / 60 days); can also result in Building Official stop-use order.
