Corpus Christi requires pool barriers at least 4 feet tall with non-climbable materials. Chain-link is prohibited. Gates must self-close and self-latch with latches at least 54 inches high.
Corpus Christi pool barrier requirements follow both local code and Texas Health and Safety Code Chapter 757. All residential swimming pools, hot tubs, and spas must be enclosed by a barrier at least 4 feet in height. Chain-link fencing is specifically prohibited for pool barriers because it is considered climbable. The barrier must have no openings that could allow a sphere 4 inches in diameter to pass through. The gap between the bottom of the barrier and the ground cannot exceed 2 inches. All gates and doors providing access to the pool area must be self-closing and self-latching, with the latch mechanism positioned at least 54 inches above the finished ground surface. Pool barriers must be in place before the pool is filled with water. The requirements apply to both in-ground and above-ground pools with a water depth of 24 inches or more. Inspections by the city are required before the pool can be used. Contact Development Services at (361) 826-3240.
Failure to maintain pool barriers: fines up to $500 per day. Pool must be drained or covered until compliant barrier is installed. Repeat violations may result in Class C misdemeanor charges.
