Corpus Christi adopts the International Fire Code under Chapter 14 of the Code of Ordinances. IFC ยง 308.1.4 prohibits open-flame cooking devices and LP-gas containers larger than 1 lb on combustible balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction at multi-family buildings. Single-family backyard grilling is unrestricted. Nueces County burn bans during drought target open burning of vegetation, not commercial grills.
Corpus Christi enforces fire-prevention rules through the Corpus Christi Fire Department and Fire Marshal under Chapter 14 of the Code of Ordinances, which adopts the International Fire Code with local amendments. IFC ยง 308.1.4 prohibits charcoal burners and other open-flame cooking devices on combustible balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction at apartments, condominiums, and similar multi-family residences. LP-gas (propane) containers larger than 1 pound are similarly restricted. Exceptions apply where the building is fully sprinklered or the device is electric. For single-family detached homes there is no city restriction on backyard charcoal, propane, or natural-gas grilling. During Nueces County burn bans declared by Commissioners Court under Texas Local Government Code ยง 352.081 (typically July through October during drought), commercially manufactured grills used for food preparation remain permitted; open burning of yard waste, brush, or trash is prohibited. The Coastal Bend region's frequent high-wind days during hurricane season prompt voluntary caution. Multi-family complexes throughout Corpus Christi, Flour Bluff, and Padre Island condos enforce IFC ยง 308 strictly because of sea-breeze conditions and combustible exterior cladding common in beach construction.
IFC ยง 308.1.4 violations on multi-family balconies are Class C misdemeanors under Corpus Christi Code with fines up to $2,000 per day for fire code violations. The Fire Marshal may order immediate removal. Burning during a Nueces County burn ban carries enhanced penalties up to $500 per offense under Texas Local Government Code ยง 352.081.
